Gift in the Mail

When I returned from this last trip, I found a package waiting for me. Inside were four beautiful pieces of blue dyed fabric that had been snow dyed by Kelly Hendrickson!

I had totally forgotten that I had won them a few weeks ago in her Celebrate Snow Giveaway on her blog. Kelly is still giving away snow dyed fabrics each week so be sure to check out her blog!

Aspen Winter Wonderland

While visiting Aspen for a wedding, I had an opportunity to take a walk outside the town. There are places within walking distance that are peaceful. Here are a few wintertime photos.

Just below the town is a space called the John Denver sanctuary. There are a number of rocks engraved with lyrics that he wrote.

I won't tell you how many photos I took of this ice formation! One will undoubtedly turn up in a quilt.

Women's Museum of California

One of the places that I visited in San Diego was the Women's Museum of California where I viewed the exhibit, Capturing the Wonder of Women. This exhibit encompassed a wide range of works by regional residents using varied media. It is on view through Sunday, February 24, 2013.

Here are a few of the works that caught by my eye. The first is a beautiful glass piece by Vicki Leon.

Surya (Sun) Chakra by Vicki Leon
This art quilt by Kathleen McCabe was inspired by a photo sent from Afghanistan of women trainin for security forces.  I have included a close up which shows some of the intricate detail in the work. Kathleen had some of the pieces laser cut.
Gender Equality by Kathleen McCable

Bhavna Mehta's piece is cut paper.

Modern Woman Story #6 by Bhavna Mehta
And, finally, here is a grouping of three works. The structure on the floor by Stephanie Bedwell is made of reeds and wool and is entitled, Predicting Vulnerability. The art quilt on the left is Threads of Identity by Linda Anderson; the one on the right is Portrait of Adele by Barbara Friedman.

Fun Day in San Diego with SAQA Friends

I spent the last few days in San Diego and, while there, I was able to hook up with two SAQA members I have come to know - Jeanne Marklin and Kathleen McCabe. Jeanne and I were both in the Taiwan International Quilt Exhibition last year; Kathleen curated the No Place to Call Home SAQA exhibit which toured a few years ago. Both are great company. Since Jeanne was also visiting San Diego and staying near me, Kathleen, who lives in San Diego, offered to take both of us on an art adventure.

We visited the Visions Art Museum to see their exhibit Quilt Visions 2012 which is on view through February 17, 2013. I wasn't able to take photos of the exhibit but it is really worth a visit.

Later in the day, we drove over to the Poway Center for Performing Arts to see Creative Inspirations - a show by the SAQA SoCal SoNev region which will be on view until January 29, 2013. Kathleen has two pieces in the exhibit and I was able to see two works by another of my SAQA internet friends, Linda Miller.

It was a wonderful day and I am looking forward to seeing Jeanne and Kathleen again in Santa Fe in April for SAQA's Annual Conference.
