Quilt in Progress

From a pile of pink fabrics, a quilt is growing.  It will be a baby gift.

I found a pattern online - a freebie that appealed to me. It is called Vintage Turnovers by Cute Quilt Patterns. One  of the fabrics I selected particularly appealed to me so I am, of course, altering the design of the quilt to accent it.

Here is my basic layout:
The pattern was fairly easy to follow. One of the things that appealed to me was that the space between the blocks was filled with multicolored rows of complementary fabrics.  I thought it was a touch that inhanced the pattern.
My hope is to be able to finish the piecing and be on to quilting within a week.

Scents of Kerala

This past weekend I traveled to CT for a board meeting of the Franciscan Family Apostolate, an organization I belong to that assists families in Alleppey, India. It is something that my family has been involved with since the 1970's. A number of the board members visited Alleppey a few weeks ago. One of them brought back gifts of spices for the rest of us. She wanted to share the scents of India as we began our meeting.

I took one look and immediately thought 'art quilt'. Take a look at these spices. Included are cardamon, caraway, fennel and star anise. They smell absolutely wonderful and totally inspire me. The star anise is particularly brilliant.

I did pay attention for the meeting but, in the back of my mind, an art quilt was forming. :)

Quilts are Everywhere

I spent four days last week at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ at a Summer Camp for aikido practitioners. I had little free time for sketching, etc. related to my quilt art but my mind was never far from my quilt projects.

There was a quiet treed place near the gym where I would sit between classes. The last morning as I was missing my Bernina, I studied the building across from where I was sitting. I spied a potential quilt pattern in the design. Soon I was looking at all the surrounding buildings for similar patterns. It goes to prove that you can find ideas anywhere if you look with the eyes of a quilter.

Dorm at Rowan University. Can you see the pattern?
